PHONE SCAM

We received an important message about a phone scam from a sister co-op, Steele-Waseca, that we wanted to share with you:

"Steele-Waseca just received a phone call from our member Mackenthun’s Fine Foods in Lonsdale. The store manager was first told the call was from Xcel energy and that if he didn’t pay within an hour their power would be disconnected. The store manager told them he didn’t receive power from Xcel and that his bill was current.

The caller said that Xcel had bought his power line, but then later in the discussion transferred him to some southern-accented “Lori” who was supposedly from Steele-Waseca and she continued on with the story. When he asked to speak with their supervisor, he was put on hold and after a couple minutes the call ended.

There was so much more to the manager’s story. Sounded like he was on the phone with the two representatives for quite a while. He said they were very convincing. Just wanted you to know about this latest scam."

Remember, Co-op Light & Power will never disconnect you without notice. If your account is delinquent, a notice will come to you in the mail. We will never call and require you to pay immediately over the phone or threaten disconnection, unless you have failed to keep prior payment arrangements.

If you receive a suspicious phone call, and do not believe it is Co-op Light & Power, please feel free to hang up and call Co-op Light & Power directly. You can also hang up and call your local law enforcement authorities immediately.
